IIASA's GAINS model explores cost-effective emission control strategies to reduce greenhouse gases and/or improve local and regional air quality. By selecting a smart mix of measures, countries can reduce air pollution control costs as well as cut greenhouse gas emissions. This portal provides access to the on-line implementations of the GAINS model for Annex I countries of the UNFCCC Convention, to more detailed implementations for Europe, China and India, and to supporting documentation material.

The GAINS model is accessible through any web browser software (Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Microsoft Internet Explorer). Access is free.  For technical reasons a one-time registration is required, after which a password will be sent automatically via e-mail.

By default, users are granted permission for displaying and downloading all data (subject to acceptance of the disclaimer and licensing conditions). Permission to upload data is granted to collaborators on demand.

Tutorials are available that explain how to conduct typical operations in a step-by-step manner. In addition to a general tutorial applicable to all versions of GAINS, a tutorial tailored to the Asian versions of the model is also available. A user manual provides an introduction to the Mitigation Efforts Calculator (MEC) to help a new user get started.
